Direct Debits are the default payment method for most UK subscriptions — broadband, mobile, gym memberships, streaming services, utilities, and more. When you want to stop paying for something, you have two options: cancel the subscription with the company, or cancel the Direct Debit at your bank.
This guide shows you exactly how to cancel a Direct Debit at every major UK bank, what happens when you do, and what you should do afterwards.
. Steps match current UK banking apps and online portals. Official guidance: Direct Debit Scheme.
The important bit: cancelling the Direct Debit does not cancel the subscription
This is the most common mistake:
The company will not be notified. Your contract with them still exists. They may:
- Cancel your service (e.g. mobile, broadband, gym)
- Contact you for payment by another method
- Send the debt to a collection agency
- Mark you as a non-payer, which can affect credit checks
Always cancel the subscription with the company first. Then cancel the Direct Debit if they refuse or you want immediate control.
When to cancel the Direct Debit instead of (or before) cancelling the subscription
There are legitimate reasons to cancel at your bank:
- The company is difficult to cancel with — they require phone calls, retention teams, or long notice periods
- You've already cancelled but they're still charging you — the Direct Debit Guarantee protects you
- You want immediate control — cancelling the Direct Debit stops the next payment instantly
- The company has gone bust or is unresponsive — no one to cancel with
- You're being charged for something you didn't authorise — cancel first, dispute later
In all these cases, cancel the Direct Debit. Then follow up with the company in writing to confirm you have cancelled the service.

Other methods (all banks)
If you can't use online banking or the app:
- Branch: Visit any branch with ID and ask to cancel the Direct Debit. They'll do it immediately.
- Phone: Call your bank. You'll need to verify your identity. Cancellation takes effect immediately or within one working day.
- Letter: Write to your bank with your name, account number, sort code, and the Direct Debit you want to cancel. Include the company name and reference. Takes 3–5 working days.
If a payment is due in the next 1–2 days, the bank may not be able to stop it — even if you cancel online. For guaranteed prevention, cancel at least three working days in advance.
What happens after you cancel a Direct Debit
- The Direct Debit stops immediately — no further payments will be taken
- The company is not notified — your bank does not tell them you cancelled
- Your contract still exists — unless you separately cancelled the subscription
- The company may contact you — asking for payment or informing you the service has been suspended
The Direct Debit Guarantee: your protection
All Direct Debits in the UK are protected by the Direct Debit Guarantee. This means:
- Immediate refund — if a payment was taken in error, your bank must refund it immediately
- No questions asked — you don't need to prove anything to get your money back
- Advance notice required — companies must notify you before taking a payment if the amount, date, or frequency changes
If a Direct Debit is taken after you cancelled it, or if you were charged the wrong amount, contact your bank immediately and request a refund under the Direct Debit Guarantee.
Common questions
Can a company restart a cancelled Direct Debit?
No. Once you cancel a Direct Debit, the company cannot restart it. They would need your permission to set up a new Direct Debit instruction.
Will cancelling a Direct Debit affect my credit score?
Cancelling the Direct Debit itself does not affect your credit score. However, if you owe money to the company and they report you as a non-payer, that can affect your credit file. Always cancel the subscription with the company first.
Can I pause a Direct Debit instead of cancelling it?
No. UK banks do not offer a pause or hold option for Direct Debits. You can only cancel. If you want to restart payments later, the company will need to set up a new Direct Debit.
Do I need to keep proof of cancellation?
Most banks don't send confirmation, but online and app cancellations take effect immediately and are logged in your account history. If you cancel by letter or phone, keep a copy or note the date and reference number.
What if I cancelled but a payment still went through?
Contact your bank immediately and request a refund under the Direct Debit Guarantee. They must refund you straight away. If you cancelled less than three working days before the payment was due, it may have been too late to stop.
- Cancel with the company first — follow their cancellation process (check your contract for notice periods)
- Get written confirmation — email, reference number, or screenshot
- Then cancel the Direct Debit — once you're sure the subscription is cancelled
- Check your bank statement — make sure no further payments are taken
This protects you from unexpected service cancellations, debt collection, and credit file issues.
Track your subscriptions before they renew
Most people cancel Direct Debits because they forgot to cancel the subscription. SubSorted reminds you before each renewal so you can decide whether to keep or cancel — without the stress of surprise charges.
- Renewal reminders — get notified before each payment
- Free trial tracking — never forget to cancel before you're charged
- No bank access required — your data stays on your device
- Works with 100+ UK services — Netflix, Sky, broadband, gym memberships, and more
